Load calculation, new panel and main breaker, grounding and bonding brought to current code, every circuit labeled. Utility coordination for the disconnect and reconnect. Power is off most of the day.

EV charger circuits

What it involves

A dedicated 240V circuit sized to the charger, run from the panel to the garage or driveway. Hardwired or a 14-50 receptacle. Load calc first; load management if the panel is tight.

Generators & transfer switches

Standby units on a pad with automatic transfer, or a manual transfer switch or interlock for a portable. We coordinate the gas side and the inspection.

Rewiring & new circuits

A permit isn't red tape. It's a second set of eyes on work that lives inside your walls for decades.

What needs a permit in Indiana
Panel replacements and service upgrades, new circuits, EV charger circuits, generator and transfer-switch installs, and rewiring. Replacing a fixture, switch, or receptacle like-for-like does not.
Who pulls it
We do, with the county or city building department for your address (Allen County for most of our area). It's part of the written scope, not an add-on you have to remember to ask for.
What the inspector checks
Wire gauge matched to breaker size, grounding and bonding, box fill, GFCI and AFCI protection where the code requires it, working clearance in front of the panel, and that every circuit is labeled.
Why unpermitted work bites you at sale
Buyers' inspectors look for it. Unpermitted panels and circuits show up as findings, hold up closings, and can void insurance claims after a fire. A permit on file is the easy version of that conversation.

Both start with the same question: what does your panel have room for? Here's what each needs so the quote makes sense when you read it.

Level 2 EV charger

What a charger install needs

  • A dedicated 240V circuit, typically 40–60A depending on the charger. Nothing else shares it.
  • A load calculation on your panel. A 200A panel usually has room. A 100A panel often needs a load-management device or an upgrade first.
  • Hardwired or a NEMA 14-50 receptacle. Hardwired is cleaner and allows higher amperage; a receptacle lets you take the charger with you.
  • A location inside the cord's reach of the charge port, on the wall you actually park against. We measure on the site visit.
  • A permit and inspection. Also ask us about utility EV rate plans before you pick a charger.

Typical visit: half a day when the panel has capacity. A full day if the panel is upgraded the same trip.

Standby & portable generators

Standby vs. portable, with a transfer switch either way

Standby

Permanent unit on a pad, runs on natural gas or propane, starts itself within seconds of an outage through an automatic transfer switch. Whole-house or essential-circuits sizing.

Portable + transfer switch

You roll it out, plug into an inlet on the house, and flip a manual transfer switch or interlock. Powers the circuits you chose ahead of time: furnace, fridge, sump, a few lights.

Never plug a generator into a dryer outlet or run cords through a window. A transfer switch is what keeps your power from feeding back into the lines a utility crew is working on. Typical install: one to two days plus gas and inspection coordination.

How a project runs

Six steps, no surprises in the middle

The same sequence whether it's one circuit or a whole-house rewire. You'll always know which step you're on.

  1. Site visit

    We look at the panel, the route the wire has to take, and the house's age and wiring type. Bring your questions.

  2. Written scope

    What we'll do, what materials, what's included in the permit, and what could change it. You approve before anything is scheduled.

  3. Permit

    We file with the building department and, for panel work, schedule the utility disconnect. You get the permit number.

  4. Work day(s)

    We tell you how long power will be off and protect the floors on the way in. Any surprise inside a wall gets a call, not a bill.

  5. Inspection

    The inspector signs off. If they want something adjusted, that's on us, not you.

  6. Walkthrough

    We show you what changed, how the labels read, and what to do if a breaker trips. Panel directory goes on the door.

FAQ

Straight answers before you request a quote

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. We run a load calculation on your existing panel first. Many 200A panels have room; many 100A panels don't, but a load-management device can sometimes avoid a full upgrade. The quote will spell out which applies to you.
How long is the power off during a panel replacement?
Most of a workday. We schedule the utility disconnect for the morning and aim to have you back on before evening. Keep the fridge closed and plan for no well pump or sump during that window.
Is the quote free?
Project quotes (panels, chargers, generators, rewiring) come from a site visit at no charge. Troubleshooting is a diagnostic visit with a flat fee told to you before we come, credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
Will you tell me if my aluminum wiring is actually a problem?
Yes, honestly. Aluminum branch wiring in good condition with properly rated devices can be repaired connection by connection rather than ripped out. We'll show you what we find at a few boxes and let you decide.
Can I pull my own permit to save money?
Indiana lets homeowners pull permits on their own home, but the work still has to pass inspection and the liability lands on you. When we do the work, we pull the permit. It's in the scope.
Do you do the gas hookup for a standby generator?
We handle the electrical side, transfer switch, and permit, and we coordinate the gas line with a licensed gas fitter so both inspections happen in the right order. One point of contact for you.
